    Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) established in 1975 by the sugarcane growers of the co-operative sugar factories, is the only orgainzation of its kind in the World. The institute performs under one umbrella all scientific, technical and educational functions relevant to the Sugar Industry. The institute endeavour to improve and increase the productivity in the Sugar Industry through three main channels namely – Academics, Research and Extension. VSI symbolizes a unique partnership between Sugar Industry, the Scientific Community and the Cane Growers.

    The sugarcane growers in the State were really encouraged by the announcement in 1954 by the then Bombay State Government of the 12 places in the State where sugar factories could be established, with an offer of Government share capital contribution of Rs.10 lacs each if Co- operative Societies are organised for the same. The announcement fetched rush of application from about 16 Co-operative Societies. A meeting of the Promoters held in the office of the Bombay State Co-operative Bank formed a Central Committee under the Chairmanship of Prof. Dhananjayrao Gadgil for guidance the Societies about the important issues like share capital, sugarcane area, irrigation, site selection, land, transport facilities etc. State Government also appointed a Cabinet Sub-Committee for Co-operative sugar factories. With the increase in number of Co-operative sugar factories and the tremendous response received from co-operators, need of apex Institutions to guide and advise the Societies was felt. Hence on 11/2/1956 Bombay State Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Sangh was registered when 14 factories (inclusive of a Khedut Factory from Surat Dist.) were affiliated.

    The National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) was established by an Act of Parliament in 1963 as a statutory Corporation under the Ministry of Agriculture. NCDC is endowed with in-house technical and managerial capabilities in the areas of Cooperation, Organization & Methods, Financial Management, Management Information Systems, Sugar, Oilseeds, Textiles, Fruits & Vegetables, Dairy, Poultry and Live stock, Fishery, Handlooms, Civil Engineering, Refrigeration and Preservation to help cooperatives to identify/formulate projects and successfully implement them.

    Indian Sugar Mills Association ISMA

    The oldest industrial association in the country was established in 1932 when tariff protection was granted to the industry. It is recognized by the Central and State Governments as the central apex organization to voice the cause of the sugar industry. Sugar mills in the private sector as well as the public sector are eligible to become members of ISMA. Its total strength of membership as on date stands at 234 and accounts for about half of country’s total sugar production. ISMA’s history is synonymous to the growth of the sugar industry in India which also began in early 1930s.

    VAMNICOM is conceived as an intellectual nerve centre for the co-operative movement. It caters to management development through training, education, research and consultancy needs of various co-operative organizations, government departments and other national bodies.

    National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited

    The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSF) was registered as a Multi-Unit Cooperative Society on December 2, 1960 under the provisions of Bombay Cooperative Societies Act 1925 as extended to the Union Territory of Delhi. In 1972, it was deemed to be under The Delhi Cooperative Societies Act 1972 and later under the Multi State Cooperative Societies Act 1984. Since, 2002, NFCSF is deemed to be under the Multi State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002. NFCSF owes its establishment to the resolution adopted at the first all India seminar on cooperative sugar factories, held in Etikoppaka, Andhra Pradesh in 1957.
